Romantic Comedy Sequel, Coming To Africa 2, To Premiere At The African Film Festival In Dallas, Texas

MEMPHIS - “Coming to Africa 2,” the follow up to the award-winning romantic comedy, “Coming to Africa,” written and directed by Anwar Jamison has been named an official selection in the 8th edition of The African Film Festival (TAFF) set to take place June 1-3, 2023 in Dallas, Texas. The three-day festival will screen a distinctive lineup of African-themed narrative features, documentaries, and short films by filmmakers from several African nations, the U.S., and other countries around the world.

The African Film Festival is dedicated to celebrating and teaching African culture through motion pictures, arts, and storytelling. The festival will offer daily screenings beginning at 10 am at Richland College. “Coming to Africa 2” is the festival’s opening night feature film. The hilarious romantic comedy explores the themes of self-identity, self-determination and family relationships, and boasts a stellar ensemble cast that along with Jamison, includes Khalil Kain and a who’s who of Ghanaian cinema. Joining Ghana TV and film stars Nana Ama McBrown, David Dontoh, Paulina Oduro, and PY Addo Boateng (also the film’s producer) from the original movie are Nadia Buari, Gloria Sarfo, Nikki Samonas, Peter Ritchie and a host of others.

For the first time since her divorce, Akosua (Nana Ama McBrown), a Ghanaian schoolteacher, is in love again and preparing to fulfull her lifelong dream of moving to the U.S. with her new American boyfriend, Adrian (Anwar Jamison). However, when her students find out that she is leaving them, they don’t take the news well and cause her to second-guess her plan. Meanwhile, Adrian ponders ways to mend fences with Akosua’s father (David Dontoh), who was not at all impressed with him during their initial meeting.

Adrian’s brother Buck (Khalil Kain) is hard at work building up the new community co-op in their hometown back in the U.S. and sees a trip to Ghana as a way to jumpstart the process and find products for the store at more reasonable prices. Upon his arrival, he meets Akosua’s sister Yaa (Nikki Samonas) and mixes pleasure with business, while unseen danger threatens to derail his plan.  

Eye-opening and entertaining, “Coming to Africa 2” displays elements of Ghana’s culture while telling a universal story that audiences all over the world will appreciate.

The film’s predecessor, “Coming to Africa,” premiered in 2020 and came up a big winner at the 7th annual Las Vegas Black Film Festival (LVBFF), after being nominated for six jury awards, and nabbing three –Best Romance, Best Comedy and Best Actress. The film also took home the Audience Choice Award for Best Hometowner Feature Film at the Indie Memphis Film Festival (IMFF). “Coming to Africa” is available to stream on most digital platforms including Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Google Play, Tubi, Vudu and Kweli TV.

“Coming to Africa 2” was shot entirely on location in Accra, Ghana.

FUN FACT: The film was shot by cinematographer Ellis Fowler, who is also a rising Hollywood actor. He is most known for his portrayal of the character Bayo in Tyler Perry’s Sistas, and is also featured in ABC’s hit sitcom Grown-ish.
