Martin Hernandez Law Office Pledges To "Walk Like MADD" On March 31, 2023Martin Hernandez Law Office pledges to “Walk Like MADD” on March 31, 2023 and is major sponsor of the event. When participants Walk Like MADD, they help raise funds to end drunk and drugged driving with each step. They enlist supporters to sponsor them in their efforts, form teams, and can also donate as corporate sponsor, like Hernandez did on behalf of his law firm. It’s a big step toward eliminating what has become a national crisis.

Tampa, FL - Mother’s Against Drunk Driver’s West Central Florida chapter is hosting its signature fundraising “Walk Like MADD” event on March 31 at the University of South Florida. Community support, like that provided by Tampa Accident Injury Attorney Martin Hernandez, has this MADD chapter well on its way to reaching its $80,000 fundraising goal. The event is designed to raise awareness and funds to create a future of No More Victims, which is at the core of MADD’s mission.

Hernandez has been practicing law since 2001 and is one of the few attorneys in Florida to have tried over 100 jury trials. With a focus on auto accidents and other negligence claims, he has seen far more than his share of the significant impact impaired driving can have on individuals and families.

“The devastation and loss of life is breathtaking,” said Hernandez. “That’s why I walk—to bring attention to those who can’t speak for themselves, as well as those who might never live life as they knew it before their accident as a result of someone’s selfish carelessness.”

On average, two out of three people will be impacted by drunk driving in their lifetime. In fact, Martin’s brother was the victim of a drunk driving accident in which the vehicle Martin’s brother occupied rolled over several times on I-4, ejecting 3 people in the process. Martin’s brother was saved because of the seat belt, but the 3 ejected suffered life-changing injuries.

Every two minutes, someone is injured in a drunk driving crash. Every day, 28 people are killed by drunk drivers. Funds raised through Walk Like MADD events nationwide allow staff and volunteers to provide emotional support and assistance with medical and legal bills, support law enforcement, and lobby for tougher laws. This includes successful efforts to require ignition interlocks for all DUI offenders, and to support the development of technology that automatically determines whether a driver is above the legal limit to drive and disables the vehicle from operation. This technology will become standard in new vehicles due to its inclusion and requirement by manufacturers to include it in The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act passed by the U.S. Congress in 2021. The “Advanced Impaired Driving Technology” section of the Infrastructure bill mandates an advanced vehicle technology standard that is expected to prevent more than 9,400 drunk driving deaths annually, according to a 2020 study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.MADD was formed in 1980 when Cindi Lamb, from Maryland, joined Candace Lightner and other grieving mothers to rally against the crime of drunk driving. A year earlier, Lamb and her 5-month-old daughter, Laura, were hit head-on by a repeat drunk driver. Cindi was seriously injured, while Laura became the nation’s youngest quadriplegic—and the first face of injured victims, representing hundreds of thousands of others. The child died at age 6 from complications due to her extensive injuries.

“MADD Tampa, by spreading the message of not driving while impaired, is standing shoulder to shoulder with those affected and hopefully opening the eyes of those who might think it’s okay to get behind the wheel when it’s clearly not, and I applaud and wholeheartedly support their efforts, as I have for the past 16 years,“ said Hernandez.

“Walk Like MADD started 16 years ago, and community partners like Martin Hernandez has been instrumental in financial support from the start, as well as for advice and counsel throughout the years on growth and extending our reach into the community,” said Larry Coggins, Regional Executive Director of Mothers Against Drunk Driving Florida and Puerto Rico.

Hernandez has represented many drunk or impaired driving accident victims in his career, which started when he joined the Office of State Attorney for the Thirteenth Judicial District in Hillsborough County as an Assistant State Attorney. He was then promoted to the position of lead trial attorney in the narcotics division and tried numerous high-profile, complicated cases. He went into private practice in 2004 to further help those injured by the negligence of others.

According to Coggins, the Walk Like MADD event in Tampa is the largest in Tampa Bay and generates about 50 percent of the region’s annual fundraising. These funds allow for continued law enforcement support and recognition, education and outreach in schools and the community, and victim advocacy and support for the victims of a violent crime that is 100 percent preventable.
