International Veterinary Point-of-Care Ultrasound Symposium Coming to Austin, Texas

AUSTIN, Texas - June 5, 2019 - (Newswire.com)

The International Veterinary Point-of-Care Ultrasound Society (IVPOCUS) announced today that they will host their Second International Veterinary Point-of-Care Ultrasound Symposium (IVPOCUS), November 18-20, 2019 at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Austin, Texas.

This Symposium is the premier event for IVPOCUS, a 501c3 non-profit organization made up of veterinarians and veterinary and medical professionals who advocate and promote the education and advancement of Veterinary Point-of-Care Ultrasound (VPOCUS) and FAST Ultrasound formats throughout the world to improve patient care and save lives.

The 2019 Symposium Theme -- “Ultrasound-Guided Procedures” -- is cutting-edge and timely with the recent opioid crisis and the featured topic of ultrasound-guided nerve blocks. The lineup will include world-renowned speakers that represent thought leadership in Veterinary Point-of-Care and FAST ultrasound including:

·       Dr. Diego Portela, DACVA, University of Florida

·       Dr. Marta Romano, DACVA, University of  Florida

·       Dr. Teresa DeFrancesco, DACVIM, DACVECC, North Carolina State

·       Dr. Jennifer Gambino, DACVR, Mississippi State

·       Dr. Greg Lisciandro, Hill Country Veterinary Specialists, CEO of FASTVet.com and editor of the textbook Focused Ultrasound Techniques for the Small Animal Practitioner

IVPOCUS will feature Keynote Speaker Nilam J. Soni, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine, University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio. Dr. Soni’s academic interests focus on the clinical applications of hand-carried ultrasound, including ultrasound-guided procedures and diagnostic bedside ultrasound. He is the visionary and chief editor of Point-of-Care Ultrasound, now in its 2nd edition and the first ultrasound book to support all specialties at different provider levels.

“Point-of-Care and FAST ultrasound are becoming the greatest advancement for veterinary medicine this decade,” said Dr. Greg Lisciandro, Dipl. ABVP, Dipl. ACVECC and President of IVPOCUS. "With first-year medical students being similarly trained, this is a rare opportunity for veterinary medicine to be at the cutting-edge simultaneously with human medicine."

Dr. Lisciandro added, "Our goal is for IVPOCUS to promote and advance the use of everyday, practical Point-of-Care and FAST ultrasound through education. By "seeing" the problem list of the patient, diagnosis can be expedited, diagnostic testing more streamlined, and patient care more directed. This provides the potential to improve overall patient care by limiting complications, detecting problems sooner, and thus, saving lives."

This year's Symposium will include a number of key topics including: Ultrasound-Guided Regional Anesthesia and Local Blocks, Ultrasound-Guided Procedures of the Thorax and Abdomen, Pericardial & Pleural Effusion, Ocular Ultrasound, and the Use of Global FAST for staging the patient.

IVPOCUS will take place November 18-20, 2019 with 17-hours of RACE-approved continuing education through lectures, roundtables and ultrasound scanning, including combinations of dry lab for developing ultrasound-guidance techniques, demonstrations and scanning of live dogs.
