For me, the dreadful thing about dating people from APPs is awkwardness. I hate answering questions such as, "So, what do you do?" You may hear it somewhere during the first three minutes of your date. I get it. We live in a world where everyone is a branding expert - perfectly retouched profile photos, curated updates, creating a persona they want you to see, not who they really are. Swiping through profiles is carefree, creating a habit of judging people by appearance ("This one is definitely an 8") and swiping away all the Yikes ("Ew, what's with those glasses!"). We humans are so much more than appearance. With only a profile photo and some text messaging, how do you trust a stranger enough to go out with him or her?
This is where at First Sight came in handy. Before meeting, you can know people through video chats. One girl Sally signed up for a film festival. She first felt weird about video chat. "But no worries, I'm protected by mosaic," she said. "He really made a great first impression." Terry introduced himself, a student studying filming technology, which explains why the film festival. After chatting about commonly loved movies and actors, they met for the first time and instantly felt like friends. "Video is different from an online profile or texting. I know about him as a person. I go out with him because his feelings are genuine." Sally's use of other dating apps drop hugely. "It feels real when I'm using at First Sight."
