According to ACI’s 2025 Fall Cleaning Survey, an overwhelming 91% of Americans make a concerted effort to clean their homes before entertaining guests. This widespread commitment to cleanliness is about more than just appearances – it’s about crafting a welcoming space where everyone can relax and enjoy the festivities without worry.
Fresh Scents and Visible Tidy Spaces Take Center Stage
The survey, conducted by Wakefield Research for ACI, reveals that 71% of hosts focus on tidying up the spaces guests are most likely to see, ensuring that every detail contributes to a positive first impression. But the effort doesn’t stop at what’s visible: 64% of Americans make sure to empty trash bins, and 57% use air fresheners or candles to infuse their homes with inviting scents.
Beyond Aesthetics: Cleaning for Health and Comfort
This year, cleaning is also a critical part of protecting loved ones’ health. With cold and flu season in full swing, 44% of respondents are taking the extra step to disinfect surfaces, helping to reduce the spread of germs before guests arrive. These proactive measures reflect an awareness that thoughtful cleaning routines are essential for a safe and enjoyable holiday season.
The Reality of Last-Minute Hosting
Despite best intentions, holiday prep can sometimes lead to last-minute shortcuts—34% of hosts admit to hiding clutter in closets or spare rooms. But with a little advanced planning, these stressful moments can be avoided.
As Jennifer Abril, ACI President and CEO, explains, “Holiday hosting shouldn’t be just about appearances - health and comfort matter just as much. Our survey shows that many Americans understand simple steps like disinfecting surfaces and freshening the air can make a big difference in how guests feel in your home.”
Tools for a Stress-Free Holiday
ACI offers practical resources, including a Holiday Cleaning Checklist and guidance on the Levels of Clean, to help hosts prepare efficiently and choose the most appropriate cleaning strategies for their guests. By following these tips, Americans can ensure their homes are not only beautiful but also safe and welcoming for everyone who walks through the door.
This holiday season, cleaning isn’t just a chore – it’s the secret to unforgettable gatherings, filled with comfort, joy, and peace of mind for all.
About the Survey
The ACI Cold & Flu Survey was conducted by Wakefield Research (www.wakefieldresearch.com) among 1,000 nationally representative U.S. adults ages 18+, between August 26th and September 2nd, 2025, using an email invitation and an online survey. The data has been weighted to ensure an accurate representation of nationally representative U.S. adults ages 18+.
Results of any sample are subject to sampling variation. The magnitude of the variation is measurable and is affected by the number of interviews and the level of the percentages expressing the results. For the interviews conducted in this particular study, the chances are 95 in 100 that a survey result does not vary, plus or minus, by more than 3.1 percentage points from the result that would be obtained if interviews had been conducted with all persons in the universe represented by the sample.
