Atrium Health CISO Todd Greene Joins Semperis as Strategic Advisor

Atrium Health Recently Participated in Semperis’ $200M+ Funding Round, Led by KKR

Semperis, a pioneer of identity-driven cyber resilience for enterprises, today announced the addition of Todd Greene, Vice President & Enterprise CISO at Charlotte, North Carolina-based Atrium Health, to its Strategic Advisory Board. Atrium Health participated in Semperis' recent Series C funding round of more than $200 million, led by KKR. In his advisory role, Todd will guide Semperis’ healthcare-specific initiatives and be a strategic resource for customers, including the world’s largest health systems.

“Just as healthcare leaders unite to make groundbreaking discoveries for better medical outcomes, we need to take the same collaborative approach to cybersecurity research and innovation for a safer world,” said Greene. “Atrium Health seeks out companies building category-defining solutions that benefit the entire healthcare industry. Semperis is widely adopted in the healthcare sector, with a focus on protecting critical and persistently targeted identity systems, like Active Directory and Azure AD. It’s an honor to join Semperis as a strategic advisor and provide my first-hand perspective, representing healthcare CISOs dealing with the ongoing, daily challenges of cyber threats.”

Greene has been with Atrium Health for more than 23 years. Over time, he has been part of the organization’s growth into an integrated, multi-state health provider that now includes Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, also in North Carolina, and Atrium Health Navicent and Atrium Health Floyd in Georgia.

In January 2000, Greene became a founding member of the newly created Information Security department, where he has served in a variety of roles. He has also led several other major initiatives during his tenure, including Health Information Exchange and Disaster Recovery. Becker’s Hospital Review recognized Greene as one of 61 “CISOs To Know in 2020.”

“The stakes are higher in healthcare, as cyberattacks can literally put lives at risk,” said Semperis CEO Mickey Bresman. “Cutting-edge innovation is in Atrium Health’s DNA, and I admire Todd’s long track record of cybersecurity leadership – especially in the areas of threat exchange and research, disaster recovery and customer advocacy."

Organizations in the healthcare sector are among the most targeted by ransomware attackers. The exploitation of enterprise identity systems such as Microsoft Active Directory (AD) and Azure AD, used in over 90% of enterprises, is a common thread in the surge of ransomware attacks on healthcare companies. Attackers take advantage of weak AD configurations to identify attack paths, access privileged credentials and deploy ransomware. With its multi-layered defense approach before, during and after an attack, Semperis offers the industry’s most comprehensive security technology for hybrid AD, combined with incident response expertise.

“Semperis is often called on to help hospitals regain control of their AD environments after a cyberattack so that operations can swiftly resume without disrupting patient services,” continued Bresman. “In many cases, the AD is destroyed and requires our incident response experts to hunt down the adversary, close security holes and eliminate vulnerabilities so that the hospital can trust the environment again."

In addition to scaling its staff globally, Semperis is dedicating a significant portion of its Series C funding round to research and development to drive further innovation in the Identity Threat Detection and Response (ITDR) market. Gartner recently included ITDR in its list of top cybersecurity trends for 2022, noting that credential misuse is a primary method attackers use to access systems and achieve their goals.
