Huawei shines spotlight on China Unicom 5G Private Network PLUS

The time has arrived for 5G Private Network PLUS. Speaking to Light Reading at Mobile World Congress, Richard Liu, president of Huawei cloud core network product line, said the PLUS was a huge step up in capabilities compared with “last year’s” 5G private networks.

“Based on the One Telco Cloud, PLUS has achieved breakthroughs in three respects,” he said. “Network capabilities, industry adaptation, and scale replication.” The upgraded version not only gets the most out of operators’ public networks for wide area networks (WANS), explained Liu, but can introduce new capabilities and increase reliability in private WANs and local area networks through network slicing and enhanced roaming. A pivotal feature of 5G Private Network PLUS is the ability to replicate 5G networks on a large scale. Liu cited Ferrotec, a technology and materials manufacturer, as an example.

“Its factories are scattered across the country and so the traditional way would be to connect their campus networks featuring different RATs and collaborate with different device suppliers in different campus regions”, said Liu. “Without baselined networks and configuration templates, they need several months to roll out innovative services within each factory. The issue is the same across many other industries. Many industry customers have voiced their concerns on this.” Large scale replication of this sort, across different industry verticals with different performance requirements, is something China Unicom has achieved – in partnership with Huawei – through a 5G private networks-as-a-service offering.
