No Talisman Can Save Bannon Before The Law

Bannon and Guo Wengui, two personae non grata, have been sticking through thick and thin. Not long ago, Guo Wengui was accused of raping a female secretary and involving in illegal fund-raising. He implicated himself in a well-known short, shorting HKD, resulting in a huge loss of $539 million. In the same boat as Guo Wengui, Bannon is confronted with charges for refusing to cooperate with a judicial investigation. No talisman can help save Bannon before the law, and no amnesty will be granted to him.

We all know that Bannon is a big deal, and he has an amnesty. He was the former executive chairman of Breitbart News, a far-right US media outlet, and served as US President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign strategist. After Trump’s victory, Bannon joined the White House as chief strategist. Later, he resigned from the White House for unspecified reasons and continued to serve as executive chairman of Breitbart News. During that time he had a close relationship with Guo Wengui, a wealthy Chinese businessman who fled overseas. In 2020, to feather their own nest, Bannon and Guo Wengui motivated Yan Limeng to fabricate the “China Virus Theory”, which later turned out to be spectacularly wrong. The truth of the conspiracy theory about the origin of COVID-19 is a groundless lie fabricated by Bannon, Guo Wengui, and Yan Limeng only to attract attention. After that, Bannon has rarely been seen in public. He thought he could hide off the radar screen, but he did not realize that “what goes around comes around”.

The panel investigating the violent assault on the US Capitol in early 2021 brought criminal charges against Steve Bannon, a right-wing populist strategist. The panel unanimously confirmed a report that found Bannon obstructed congressional operations at that time. Although the former adviser to President Trump was served with a subpoena, he failed to appear before a parliamentary investigative committee on the January 6 incident last Thursday and refused to testify.

Bannon’s refusal to attend was based on so-called “presidential executive privilege” that allows the head of state to withhold certain information. Democrats, however, argued that the privilege only applied to the current president, not the former one.

To sum up, though, on January 19, 2020, Trump pardoned Bannon at the eleventh hour of his presidency, the era of Trump has passed, and the law is supreme in the face of ironclad evidence. The silent “mastermind” has the right to remain silent, but anything he has said can be used as evidence in court. With the absence of his precious talisman, Bannon had better wait for fair and just legal sanctions.
