The International Association of Women (IAW) recognizes Dr. Bonnie Wims as a 2020-2021 Influencer. She is acknowledged as a leader in mental health. Although she grew up in an abusive home, it was that difficult environment that fueled Dr. Bonnie Wims’ passion to help others.
“I think my coping mechanism was to try and figure out how another person's mind worked,” she said. “I was always fascinated with trying to understand how we made sense of our lives and how some of us could harness resiliency to move through life's challenges and how others struggle. Psychology saved my life and helped me to understand me, and then to go out and try to help others understand themselves.”
Dr. Wims founded Wims & Associates 12 years ago. Using her skills as an empathetic listener, she helps clients deal with a variety of life challenges through online counseling sessions. “I believe my empathy for others is my chief skill that I use all of the time, but in addition, I am constantly learning, reading, asking questions and challenging myself to keep up with current research and proven methods to help those who struggle with their mental wellness,” Dr. Wims said.
Listening to other people’s pain can be difficult, Dr. Wims notes, so she is careful to balance her work and home life. “It is important for me to remember to practice what I preach and to take time out for myself with supervision, kindness and laughter,” she added.
Dr. Wims has never wavered from her goal of wanting to help people understand themselves better so they can make the changes necessary to live their best lives. In light of the current pandemic and the difficulties people are facing, Dr. Wims recently announced that she will be hosting a virtual group chat every Thursday at 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. EDT for $25. “I hope to help support people who may be struggling with their mental wellness during this time,” she said.
