THE FACTS ABOUT CPAP MACHINE AND THE SLEEP APNEA BREATHING CONDITION

The CPAP machine has been so essential in the health sector due to its incredible help to the people suffering from breathing problems when sleeping. You could have heard of CPAP therapy though you could not have a total information about what a CPAP machine entails in treating sleep apnea and here is the information about the machine.

The acronym CPAP in full means Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. It simply means a pressurized air that is released through a special system of delivery that utilizes a mask. For the last 30 years, CPAP therapy has been used in treating sleep apnea. This machine composed of a small box with a motorized fan within it. The fan located in the machine helps in drawing air within the room, pressurize it gently and release it at a specific setting of the patent’s need. The air delivered to the patient is free from smoke, dust or any other impurities as it is filtered by the filter situated at the air intake part of the CPAP machine. The filter is replaceable any time it is necessary to do so.

There is also another important part of the CPAP machine that is basically helpful to the patients living in arid or dry climates placed or those who wake up with dry nasal passage, throat or mouth. It is called the humidification chamber also built within the box. Before the pressurized air is delivered, it is humidified by water that is warmed at this section. This warmed and moist air is very important as it helps in preventing swelling and discomfort that may sometimes occur during the therapy because it soothes the upper passage of the airway and the nasal.

There is also a hose that is attached to the CPAP and connects the box to the mask. It is a lightweight and flexible tubing and is also heated in order to decrease any condensation that might gather within it as a result of the humidified air. It is long enough for a comfortable movement of the user when sleeping.

Sleep apnea is a very serious sleeping health problem that mostly occurs by interrupting a person’s breathing when sleeping. If this condition is not treated, the person having it will stop breathing many times when sleeping thus preventing supply of oxygen in brain and the other parts of the body.

This health condition is in two types that include the Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and the Central sleep apnea. The Obstructive sleep apnea is the common form among the two and it occurs when the airway is blocked mostly as a result of the collapsing of the soft tissue found at the back of the throat when one is sleeping. The Central sleep apnea develops as a result of the failure of the brain to signal the muscles to breathe. This happens when there is an instability at the control center of the respiratory system.

The CPAP machine is mostly used in treating OSA. The people suffering from sleep apnea are mostly given their air pressure prescription that is determined when the patient visits a sleep laboratory. The patient is also given the prescription of the specific CPAP machine and the equipment that is used to deliver it.

The CPAP machine works through the tubing way with the help of the mask to deliver a stream of pressurized air so as to prevent the collapsing that is experienced in Obstructive sleep apnea. It specifically help in keeping the airway passage firm and open. This pressurized air helps the user to freely breathe without any obstructions by providing the necessary support.
