In India, malaria is a major public health problem in the states with widespread of tribal population. Tribal population is mostly residing in remote areas that are difficult to reach due to typical geographical locations like forest, hills and valleys. The proportions of tribal population vary considerably among Indian States/Union Territories. The tribal regions of India have high mortality and malaria prevalence. About 60 per cent of malaria cases in India are confined to tribal areas.
More than 10 per cent of the total population of Maharashtra state belongs to tribal population groups. There is an upward trend of malaria cases in the tribal blocks. The Tribal Development Department of Government of Maharashtra is making efforts to find out the prevalence of various type of malaria and to see the interrelationship between rainfall and incidence of malaria cases.
Malaria is a global disease and various factors influence it both man-made and natural calamities like excessive rainfall, flood, drought and other disasters have great impact and increase the potential for malaria transmission.
