Linden Optometry P.C. Celebrates National Sunglasses Day

By: PRLog
#NationalSunglassesDay was the focus of patient education about the dangerous effects of UV Light on the eyes, as well as the importance of UV Eye Protection by wearing quality sunglasses. Activities included a "My Favorite Sunglasses" contest.
PASADENA, Calif. - June 27, 2016 - PRLog -- June 27th was National Sunglasses Day. The doctors and staff of Linden Optometry P.C. made an effort to educate the public about the dangers of Ultra-Violet Light on the eyes.

Dr. Alan Limfat, O.D., President of Linden Optometry P.C., expressed his views about eye protection:

"Most patients put on sunscreen to protect them from the harsh sun that can cause painful sun burn. They can't put sunscreen in their eyes, but they can wear UV-A and UV-B polarized sunglasses to protect their eyes from the harmful Ultra-Violet Light.

"Today we worry a lot about the sun causing premature wrinkles from sun damage. The same sunlight that burns your skin also enters your eyes through the pupil and causes harm to your intra-ocular lens and retina. Consequently, cumulative sun exposure starting from childhood through adulthood can contribute to early cataract and macular degeneration. If you have taken preventive measures to limit your sun exposure early on in life by wearing sunglasses, then you've delayed and minimized the chances of having early cataracts or macular degeneration. Kudos to you!!"

A staff contest also took place. Staff members were asked to write about their favorite sunglasses for UV Protection. The two winners were Stewart and Nenita.

Stewart began:

"My favorite sunglasses would have to be the Cartier rimless sunglasses. They are extremely lightweight and comfortable. The lens shape I am able to change every time I have my prescription updated, so the shape of the lens is always current in terms of style. I always have my sunglass lenses polarized because polarization eliminates distracting glare and provides clarity, especially when I drive. Polarized lenses cut glare from reflective surfaces such as roads and water. Mirror coating is also quite fashionable so I decided to have my sunglass lenses with a flash mirror on them."

Nenita then shared her views:

"Many people start with shoes or a top to set the tone for an outfit, but for me, my outfit inspiration starts with my sunglasses. Sometimes my sunglasses are the focal point of my look, while other times my sunglasses provide the finishing touch for my outfit. I love putting on a good pair of high quality lenses wrapped in stylish frames and walking out side on a sunny day looking good and seeing well."

Nenita continued: "I chose my sunglasses carefully to make sure they're comfortable, stylish, and functional. My favorite pair of sunglasses are tortoise shell Pradas because they have a very unique design. I enjoy how vivid the world looks through their polarized lenses, and feel good taking care of my eyes with strong UV protection the Prada sunglasses provide."

Dr. Limfat then summed up National Sunglasses Day:

"It is never too early or too late to wear sunglasses. If we spend so much money on special anti-aging creams and skin lotions to defy aging, we should really invest in a good pair of sunglasses for eye protection."

Dr. Limfat added: "Children are especially at risk for too much UV light because kids have larger pupils than adults. Larger pupils among children can easily mean receiving three times UV light compared to adults over 40. Additionally, kids tend to spend more time outdoors than adults who are indoors working. Remember: it is never too early to wear sunglasses. The best sunglasses are the polarized polycarbonate lenses with a backside Anti-Reflective (AR) coating. Maui Jim and Oakley brands are some of the better sunglasses."

Although #NationalSunglassesDay is now over, patient education about wearing sunglasses for UV Protection will continue indefinitely.
