We all have times with our kids where we just want to pull our hair out when they continue to fight and not get along. These can be some of the most frustrating moments as a parent because all we want for our kids is to be happy, but kids fight, and personalities clash no matter what we do. While there is no easy solution to making your children get along, teaching your children to work together is a huge step in the right direction.

Teamwork is a needed skill not only in the household but also in every step of life moving forward. According to the Pew Research Center, teamwork is a skill that is necessary to succeed in life. By starting young and teaching your children teamwork, you are setting them up for success later in life.

Join Organized Activities

If you want your kids to learn teamwork, the best and most obvious solution is to have them join a team. Activities such as team sports, scouts, dance, or volunteer work offer so many learning opportunities for your children like boosting self-esteem, improving physical health, building problem-solving skills, and creating friendships. These activities also are a great way to learn to work together as a team since everyone has one goal, but no one can accomplish it alone.

Thankfully because there are so many options, you can cater to your children’s interests when choosing which activities to join. This will give them more incentive and interest to do well in the activities.

Teach Encouragement

How many times have we seen children trying to do everything on their own and fighting for control? I’m sure you’ve heard one of your kids say something like “Mom, it’s my turn to play with this toy?” Or “Dad, why does my sister get to go first?” Kids, especially siblings, are always trying to one-up one another, and it can grow trying to constantly referee their petty arguments.

A way to mitigate this issue and improve teamwork is by encouraging encouragement. Teaching your children to look for ways to tell their teammates or siblings that they are doing a good job or pointing out something they are doing well will allow them to begin seeing how others are contributing. By searching for ways to support others, your children will learn empathy and start seeing the benefits of working together.

Challenge Them

If your kids still struggle with working together, give them a game or activity that requires more than one person to accomplish it. Brescia University has a list of team-building exercises for kids.

Fingertip Hula Hoop

For this game, take a hula hoop (or a stick) and tell all of the kids to only tough the hula hoop with one finger. The goal of the game is to lower the hula hoop to the ground with everyone’s finger having constant contact with the hula hoop.

If you want to add another challenge, place your finger on top of the hula hoop and press down while the kids are placing their fingers underneath. Once you say start, let go, and the hula hoop will bounce upward, and the kids will have to figure out how to counteract this issue while maintaining contact.

Mine Field

Set out objects in a path that your kids will have to navigate through. Then pair them up and have one “blinded” while the other one is guiding them through the obstacles. Of course, you can add more challenges by giving different commands and make it as fun as you want.

One thing to keep in mind when you are challenging them during these games is to be patient. Kids are kids and they are going to fail, but sometimes you just have to let them learn on their own in these low-stakes games. You can guide them by asking questions, but it is better to let them struggle through rather than just telling them what they should be doing.

Want to Learn More?

Teaching your children teamwork will be an ongoing process, but never give up because one day your children will thank you for the care that you showed them through all of this. For more helpful team-building activities, visit The Learning Experience’s YouTube channel, Bubbles and Friends.
