Colorado Government: For, By, and With the People

By Christian Komor

It is high time the public moved past the “cult of personality” that currently dominates our politics. While history occasionally gifts us a Washington, a Lincoln, or a Roosevelt, deifying a single individual is a gamble we can no longer afford. Too often, the concentration of power in a single person—from Hitler and Stalin to the modern-day aggressions of Putin and Kim Jong Un—drags entire populations into a darkness from which we struggle to recover.

Since the pandemic, while we should have been coming to terms with our true endgame problem—the climate emergency—we have instead watched global leaders engage in cycles of invasion, rampage, and humanitarian crisis. If we are to survive as a species, we must do better than the “follow-the-leader” model of governance. Nations like Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and Switzerland already rank high on global governance indexes by utilizing more sophisticated, collaborative systems. Even the founders of the United States intended for a self-correcting government, yet entrenched interests have resisted that healthy evolution for 250 years.

It is time to replace the amateurish “Presidential” or “Gubernatorial” concept with a Multi-Member Executive Council steered by priorities established by Citizen Assemblies. Under this model, “emergency” powers would be ratified by the people, and any executive action with long-term planetary impact—such as war or carbon policy—would be required to pass a Future Generations Council.

As a candidate for Colorado Governor, my platform emphasizes a fundamental shift from a top-down administrative model to one defined by “Governance by and for the People”. We will achieve this realignment through four pillars of systemic reform:

  1. Direct Citizen Input Mechanisms We will launch a permanent Daily Citizen Dashboard where residents can vote on policy priorities and track exactly how their input influences state decisions through weekly summaries. To handle complex issues like water policy and housing, we will utilize Citizen Juries—randomly selected, demographically representative groups of Coloradans. We will also establish Structured Citizen Assemblies to guide long-term planning and Youth Councils to ensure the voices of those who will inherit this state are represented in every major decision.
  2. Radical Accessibility and Briefings To reduce the “Capitol Bubble,” our administration will hold Public Cabinet Meetings that rotate weekly through rural and urban communities across the state. I will hold Open Office Hours and visit every single county annually to engage directly with residents. Furthermore, we will replace political rhetoric with Weekly Public Briefings on major decisions and safety metrics, presented in a non-ideological, data-driven manner.
  3. Total Transparency and Accountability Every executive agency will be mandated to publish “Why We Made This Decision” Memos. These plain-language reports will detail exactly what citizens said, what the science showed, and how our core principles guided the outcome. Citizens will have real-time oversight through a suite of Transparency Dashboards, including a Public Environmental Dashboard for air and water quality, and a Statewide Risk Map detailing the climate and economic threats facing our communities.
  4. Independent Oversight To ensure these tools aren’t just performative, we will create the Colorado Civic Input Office to integrate public data into agency decisions. A bipartisan Security and Civil Liberties Oversight Board will review National Guard deployments and security technologies, while a Principles Office will serve as an ombudsperson to review major decisions for principle violations and accept direct citizen petitions.

We are out of time for the politics of the past. As our atmosphere approaches a 450 ppm tipping point and our local economy stares down a $37 billion fiscal cliff, we cannot afford to follow the leader into the abyss. We need a structure that hands the wheel thoughtfully and strategically back to the people. This November, you aren’t just voting for a Governor; you are voting for the only structural path that treats our survival as the priority it is. If we do not change how we govern today, we will have nothing left to govern tomorrow.

Vote for the science. Vote for your children. Vote HARD.
