Roland TD-27KV2 & Alesis Strata Prime Electric Drums: Comparison Guide Released

Sam Ash has published a new guide on the Roland TD-27KV2 and Alesis Strata Prime electronic drum sets, comparing the two models to help drummers make an informed decision.

-- The latest guide from Sam Ash covers the specs of both the Roland TD-27KV2 and the Alesis Strata Prime, two high-end electric drum sets that are frequently recommended for high-quality sound production. Designed for musicians, the resource covers differences in sound modules and pad technology, as well as how these properties affect the pricing of the drum kits.

Recent shopping trends show that electronic drum sets have been steadily growing in popularity, peaking earlier this year. Industry experts cite their affordability and precise sound control as key attractants, with the latter allowing the instruments to be played in apartments or other places where noise may be a concern.

Of the electronic drums in the market, two models stand out as premium options for both novices and professionals: the Roland TD-27LV2 and the Alesis Strata Prime.

Sam Ash says the Roland TD-27KV2 drum kit comes with Roland’s flagship TD-50 DNA V-drums sound module, using Prismatic Sound Modeling to replicate the behavior and response of acoustic instruments - striking different areas of the drum pad or applying varying amounts of force will yield distinct tones, much like a conventional drum. While the kit comes with 75 preset sound samples, players can import their own sounds and mix them with existing samples, allowing them to create unique kits.

In contrast, the Alesis Strata Prime features a 40GB sound library powered by the BFD engine. The kit includes a 10.1-inch touchscreen for navigation and has physically larger pads, including a 20-inch kick drum.

With a powerful, multi-core processor, the Strata Prime’s module can load 75 preset kits, over 440 kit pieces, and more than 215,000 individual samples; settings like snare tuning and reverb can also be adjusted easily with the user-friendly touchscreen interface.

Sam Ash notes that jazz, fusion, and session players will likely prefer the Roland, while rock and metal musicians may find the Alesis more suitable for their playing preferences. However, the Alesis is the more expensive of the two - for this reason, the company recommends the option for professional players. Musicians on a budget can consider purchasing a Roland on an open box deal, which is over $1,000 cheaper.
