Based on actual events, Margaretha Javits gripping novel transports readers to 14th-century Scandinavia where Sweden's royal family (The Folkungs) find themselves deeply entrenched in a twisted tale of rivalry, politics, and family ties.
The Empty Throne
The story begins in the year 1291, after the demise of Sweden’s King Magnus, who has left behind three sons, all underage. The sons await the arrival of the Regent, a powerful noble and celebrated warrior, who will teach them the arts of governing, knighthood, and war skills until the eldest son, Birger, comes of age.
As the young princes mature, Birger proves himself completely inept to be king and is easily manipulated by the self-seeking Regent instead. He accuses his innocent brothers of treachery and wages war against them as punishment, wreaking unnecessary bloodshed on the land.
Erik, the middle child, and the brightest of the lot, cannot bear to see his beloved kingdom fall to ruins. As alliances form across the borders, the royals start taking sides, each motivated by their own interests.
