Program strengthens links between animal welfare and public health with new veterinary clinic and rabies prevention initiative
Terramed Real Estate Solutions, a leading real estate group specializing in veterinary, ophthalmology, and fertility properties, has launched TerraGives, a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative that focuses on building and supporting facilities in communities where structural barriers make it difficult to deliver essential care.
TerraGives' initial partnerships cover a veterinary clinic construction project in Ecuador, rabies elimination efforts in Tanzania, and volunteer work at a Philadelphia-area animal shelter. Together, these efforts offer targeted support that strengthens the overall well-being of humans and animals alike.
"We've spent years removing barriers and creating conditions that give pets and people a healthier future," said Daniel Eisenstadt, CEO of Terramed. "TerraGives will apply that same principle beyond real estate by supporting organizations that have the skill and heart to provide care but need a little extra help to make it happen."
TerraGives' first campaign supports Amici Cannis, an Ecuador-based organization working with indigenous communities to improve veterinary care and manage stray dog populations. The partnership will fund construction of a veterinary clinic in Cotacachi that's expected to open early this year. In total, Terramed and related individuals and organizations contributed more than $50,000 while also helping Amici Cannis to connect to construction experts and other supporters.
"The new facility will mean we can finally offer consistent, high-quality veterinary care instead of operating at capacity in a space that limits what's possible," said Alexandra Rothlisberger, Executive Director at Amici Cannis. "Thanks to TerraGives, we can continue demonstrating that sustainable animal welfare programs improve public health outcomes."
The clinic will enable expanded spay, neuter, and vaccination campaigns that reduce zoonotic diseases and foster healthier relationships between humans and animals. It will also house a residence and training center that will allow U.S. veterinary students to gain hands-on surgical experience while Ecuadorian veterinarians receive advanced instruction.
"TerraGives is helping us build something that will last well beyond any single intervention," said Dr. Heather Steyn, Co-Founder and President of Amici Cannis. "This facility will allow us to keep training talented veterinarians who raise the standards of care and ensure that what we’ve accomplished in Cotacachi endures for generations to come."
TerraGives will also support Rabies Free Africa, an organization that prevents rabies transmission by vaccinating dogs before the disease can spread to humans. Rabies Free Africa has vaccinated 3 million dogs and protected 3.5 million people from rabies in Tanzania's Serengeti region, where post-exposure treatment is rarely accessible.
To round out the year, Terramed employees volunteered at the Brandywine Valley SPCA in West Chester, Pennsylvania, to provide direct care for shelter animals and assist with daily operations and adoption readiness programs. The volunteer day will launch an ongoing partnership between Terramed and the ASPCA and will reflect the company's commitment to supporting local animal welfare organizations.
Terramed aims to grow TerraGives' partnerships into ophthalmology and general healthcare in line with its recent expansion from veterinary real estate into other medical properties.
