Corvias Reimagines Playgrounds to Build Connection and Community at Fort Sill

New playground is designed to bring families together, with a second location opening soon at Fort Riley

Corvias, a trusted infrastructure and resiliency partner to the U.S. military and higher-education institutions, today announced a new state-of-the-art community playground at Fort Sill, OK. The project is intentionally designed to move away from dispersed playgrounds toward larger neighborhood-centered spaces that better serve residents and foster a sense of community.

More than a place to play, the new space is intended to help create a sense of continuity for military children.

“Community parks are especially valuable for children in military communities; they provide safe, familiar spaces to play, make friends, and feel a sense of stability during a life of frequent moves and deployments,” said Fort Sill Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Jared English. “Parks encourage physical activity, support emotional well-being, and help military children build connections that strengthen both their resilience and sense of belonging.”

Building on the momentum of the Fort Sill playground, Corvias is preparing to open a second community playground at Fort Riley, KS, this month. Corvias built the playgrounds to scale larger than traditional designs by featuring multiple play zones for different ages and activity levels. The goal is to encourage more interaction and greater accessibility for families across the Fort Sill housing community.

Maximizing Public Investment Through Partnership

The playgrounds were made possible through the Cunningham Recreation and GameTime Community Champions Playground Grant, which provides up to 100 percent matching funds for playground equipment. The grant partnership is a direct reflection of the deep commitment at Corvias to responsible stewardship of public resources.

“Partnering with Cunningham Recreation and GameTime allowed us to deliver higher-quality amenities while saving taxpayer dollars,” said Jim Champagne, Corvias SVP of Asset Management for Fort Sill and Fort Riley. “It’s a practical example of how thoughtful partnerships can extend impact while remaining responsible stewards of funding.”

At Fort Sill, a more than $65,000 grant reduced the total playground cost from $247,000 to $181,000. At Fort Riley, a nearly $69,000 grant reduced costs from $215,000 to under $150,000. Installation of the playground equipment and site development were funded separately.

Since opening in late 2025, the Fort Sill playground has quickly become a routine gathering place for families. Located within a short walk for many residents, it reflects Corvias’ commitment to advancing mission-aligned infrastructure that supports service member wellness and strong communities.

“This project is a powerful example of what’s possible through strong partnerships,” said Justin Long from Cunningham Recreation. “By designing an inclusive playground that promotes intergenerational play and encourages friendships, we’re helping create a welcoming environment where military families can connect, engage, and build a sense of belonging.”
