Dallas, TX - After a rare top-division sumo wrestling tournament in London drew worldwide attention this year, interest in the sport has been popping up far from the professional ring — including across North Texas. The historic event, only the second of its kind outside Japan in more than a millennium, renewed curiosity about sumo wrestling’s mix of ceremony, spectacle and crowd-friendly drama.
Here in the Dallas area, that curiosity is showing up at school events, workplace gatherings and neighborhood parties, where organizers are adding lighthearted sumo-style activities to the lineup. The padded, comedic version — complete with oversized suits and inflatable mats — has become a popular way to bring people together.
Local companies offering the setups, including Texas Sumo Game Rental, say they’ve noticed more requests lately. “It’s one of those activities where everyone ends up laughing, whether they’re in the suit or watching,” said Laura LeFlore. She added that the buzz from the London tournament seems to have reminded people how entertaining the sport can be, even in a playful form.
Most groups run it as a simple bracket-style tournament — nothing serious, just enough structure for friendly competition and plenty of photo moments.
While the North Texas version looks very different from the matches that packed Royal Albert Hall, the reaction tends to be the same: a crowd that can’t stop cheering, laughing and watching for the next wobbling takedown.
