Adjusted EBITDA Definition
Adjusted EBITDA, as noted on slide 15 within this presentation, is based on the
historical measures of segment profit/loss, EBITDA for Dow and
segment operating earnings for DuPont, reported in each companys respective 2015 Form 10-K filing. These measures were adjusted to exclude certain items for Dow and to exclude segment depreciation and amortization for DuPont.
Dow uses EBITDA (which Dow defines as earnings (i.e., Net Income)
before interest, income taxes, depreciation and amortization) as its measure of profit/loss for segment reporting purposes. EBITDA by operating segment includes all operating items relating to the
businesses; items that principally apply to Dow as a whole are
assigned to corporate. Additional information regarding Dows operating segments and a reconciliation of EBITDA to Income Before Income Taxes can be found in Note 26 to the Consolidated Financial Statements,
in Dows 2015
Form 10-K.
As its measure of segment profit/loss, DuPont uses segment operating earnings
which DuPont defines as income (loss) from continuing operations
before income taxes excluding significant pre-tax benefits (charges), non-operating pension and other postretirement employee benefit costs, exchange gains (losses), corporate expenses and interest. Non-operating pension and other postretirement
employee benefit
costs includes all of the components of net periodic benefit cost from
